Miswak in Islam: The Sunnah of Oral Hygiene
For 1,400 years, miswak has been more than a hygiene tool in the Islamic world. It's a Sunnah — a recommended practice modeled by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ — and one of the most consistently practiced acts of personal care in Muslim communities globally.
The Origin
Multiple authentic hadith record the Prophet ﷺ using miswak frequently and recommending it strongly. One famous narration from Sahih al-Bukhari: "Were it not that I would burden my Ummah, I would have ordered them to use the miswak before every prayer."
That's strong language. Miswak was so emphasized that the Prophet ﷺ considered making it obligatory before each of the five daily prayers — and held back only out of mercy for the difficulty it would create.
When the Sunnah Recommends Miswak
- Before each of the five daily prayers (salah)
- When entering the home
- Before reciting the Quran
- When the mouth feels dry or has an unpleasant smell
- When waking from sleep
- Before sleep
- Before wudu (ablution)
Why Miswak Specifically
The Prophet ﷺ used a stick from the Salvadora persica tree (the Arak). 1,400 years later, modern research has identified more than a dozen active compounds in that exact species — antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, naturally fluoride-rich. The Sunnah pre-dated the science by over a millennium.
How to Practice It Today
- Use a real Salvadora persica miswak. Our Organic Miswak is sourced directly from Pakistan, the way it's been done for centuries.
- Use it with the right hand if possible (Sunnah).
- Brush horizontally, starting from the right side. Some scholars recommend three passes per side.
- Keep it simple. The point of the Sunnah is regular use, not perfection. Even one daily use is meaningful.
For Modern Routines
If carrying a miswak stick everywhere isn't practical, the RemoBrush bakes the same miswak compounds into a bamboo toothbrush. The Sunnah is the practice of cleaning the mouth using Salvadora persica — modern formats that preserve that chemistry are valid extensions for many scholars.
Pair it with our halal-certified Miswak & Neem Toothpaste and our tongue brush for a full Sunnah-aligned routine.
For Children
Teaching kids the Sunnah of miswak is easier with the RemoMini — same miswak chemistry, scaled to small hands.
The Bottom Line
Miswak is one of the most beloved Sunnahs of the Prophet ﷺ — and one of the few that turns out to be backed by extensive modern science. Bringing it into your daily routine is both a spiritual practice and an evidence-based health upgrade.
