How to Use a Miswak: A Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners
The world's oldest toothbrush, demystified. Here's how to actually use a miswak — start to finish, no fluff.
What You're Holding
A twig from the Salvadora persica tree. Pencil-thick, 6–8 inches long, with bark stripped from one end to expose the inner fibers. That fibrous tip is your brush.
Our organic miswak is sustainably sourced from the Arak tree in Pakistan — the way it's been done for 7,000 years.
Step 1 — Inspect
- Fibers intact and faintly aromatic
- Stick firm, not brittle
- No mold, no off smell
Step 2 — Soak & Splay
If the fibers are stiff, soak the brush end for 5–15 minutes. Then chew it gently for 30 seconds to fan the fibers into a soft, pliable bristle.
Step 3 — Hold It Like a Pen
Thumb on top, fingers underneath. Firm grip, light pressure.
Step 4 — Brush in Order
- Outer surfaces, upper right → upper left
- Inner surfaces, upper
- Outer surfaces, lower right → lower left
- Inner surfaces, lower
- Chewing surfaces
- Light strokes across the tongue
Small, vertical strokes (gum-to-tooth). Never scrub.
Step 5 — Rinse & Store
Rinse mouth and miswak. Shake off water. Air-dry bristles-up.
Trim Every 4–7 Days
When the fibers darken, slice off half an inch with a clean knife and re-strip the bark. One stick lasts 2–4 weeks.
Beginner Mistakes to Avoid
- Too much pressure (your gums will tell you)
- Skipping the chew — pointy fibers poke gums
- Brushing dry — always soak first
- Forgetting the tongue (where most bacteria live)
- Quitting after one try — give it 4–5 sessions

The Bottom Line
Soak, chew, brush, rinse. Most beginners feel comfortable within a week — and there's something quietly satisfying about cleaning your teeth with a plant.
