There Might Be Pork in Your Toothpaste: How to Tell If Yours Is Halal
You probably haven't given much thought to the tube in your bathroom. Most people don't. But there's a real chance one of its ingredients is animal-derived — sometimes specifically from pork.
The Ingredients to Watch
- Glycerin. Often vegetable-derived, but can come from animal fat (including pork). Labels rarely specify the source.
- Stearic acid / sodium stearate. Same story — vegetable or animal, usually unstated.
- Bone char filtration. Some sugar and ingredient processing uses charred animal bones. Halal-uncertain.
- Gelatin and casein. Sometimes used in toothpaste capsules or powders. Animal-derived.
Why "Halal" Matters Beyond Religion
Halal certification ensures every ingredient is sourced and processed without pork, alcohol, or animal cruelty. Even if you're not Muslim, halal-certified products are often:
- Vegan or vegetarian by default
- Cleaner-label (fewer mystery ingredients)
- More transparent about supply chain
How to Verify a Toothpaste Is Halal
- Look for a halal certification mark from a recognized body (IFANCA, HFA, etc.).
- Check for "vegan" certification — automatically excludes pork and other animal products.
- Email the manufacturer if neither is listed. The answer should be straightforward.

The Bottom Line
Toothpaste isn't food, but you put it in your mouth twice a day. The ingredients matter. If yours doesn't carry a halal or vegan certification, you genuinely don't know what's in it.
